Breathing involves inhalation and exhalation. During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward, increasing the volume of the chest cavity and allowing air to enter the lungs. In the alveoli, oxygen diffuses into the blood and carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli for exhalation.
