It is the seventh-largest country in the world by area and the second-most populous. It lies entirely in the Northern Hemisphere, between latitudes 8°4’N to 37°6’N and longitudes 68°7’E to 97°25’E. The Tropic of Cancer (23°30’N) passes almost through the center of India.

India is bounded by the Himalayas in the north, the Indian Ocean in the south, the Arabian Sea in the west, and the Bay of Bengal in the east. It shares land borders with Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.

The country has diverse physical features — mountains, plateaus, plains, deserts, and coastal regions. The Northern Plains, formed by the Ganga and its tributaries, are fertile and densely populated. The Deccan Plateau in the south is rich in minerals, while the Thar Desert lies in the northwest. India also has long coastlines and beautiful islands such as the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and the Lakshadweep Islands.

India experiences varied climates, from the icy cold of the Himalayas to the tropical warmth of the south, making it one of the most geographically diverse nations on Earth.
